Nestled in the middle of the beautiful Yampa River Valley, Hayden was founded in 1876, and named for the notable F.V. Hayden who surveyed so many areas in the West. Rancing, agriculture and coal mining soon established Hayden as a commercial center for the valley and continues to be a viable aspect to our economy. Routt County, which extended for almost 200 miles east to west, was splitt in 1911, and the dynamic future which the townspeople had foreseen evaportated. The arrival of the railroad in 1913 brought a breath of life to the community, in addition to a beautiful brick depot building. But still, the vision of a great center of commerce kept eluding the little town. Today, the townspeople strive not to promote rapid growth but instead, they are attempting to maintain the town's Western charm and vitality. The unique fascination of the rural town is captured in the flavor of its distinctive history. They town's delightful Walnut Street is alive with modern-day commerce set in buildings that look very much as they did 100 years ago. In March of 2006, the town celebrated its 100th birthday as a municipality. Hayden's history is filled with and marked by the following: - Hayden Heritage Center
